Book Club

Janet Gole will host our September 23 Book Club. My book is The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters. A riveting tale of Indigenous family separation. Follow a family in Nova Scotia who travels every summer to Maine to pick blueberries as migrant workers. In the summer of 1962, 4-year-old Ruthie, the youngest, disappears from the fields. The last to see her is 6-year-old Joe, who takes the loss especially hard and carries his guilt in the years to come. Read from various perspectives the specific ways Indigenous families were treated; it’s filled with loss and sadness yet manages to be hopeful as well.

Culinary Group

The culinary group took a break over the summer but has already made plans starting in September. A meet-up for the buffet lunch created by the culinary department at Oakland Community College in Royal Oak is on the schedule for September 25. In October, the Troy Historic Village will explore early American bread-making techniques using the village’s clay oven.

If interested, contact Monica D. at culinary@troynewcomers.com so you don’t miss any information.

Evening Euchre

Welcome to a new season of Evening Euchre! We are excited to get started and start playing cards again. I want to welcome our returning members and look forward to meeting new players this season. The date for our September euchre party to start off the new season is Saturday, September 19, 2026 and will start at 6:45pm. The party will be held at my home.

We’re an intermediate group and welcome new people. If you’ve played Euchre before, consider joining us for a fun evening! Contact Darlene G. at eveningeuchre@troynewcomers.com for more information about this activity.

  Ladies Bowling

We are a very friendly and casual bunch of ladies and we have a couple of openings for regular bowlers and substitutes. All skill levels are welcome as well as beginners. The season will begin on September 17th and ends on April 29th with an end of year banquet soon after. We have breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Eve. The cost is expected to be around $12.00 a week. The alley provides free shoes and bowling balls for use each week as well, if you need them.
Contact Darcel Connors at darcelc@prodigy.net to sign up for the league. Teams will be announced after the Kick Off.

For more information send an e-mail to ladiesbowling@troynewcomers.com

Ladies Morning Euchre

Welcome back to our new season Euchre Players! Our first Euchre is Tuesday, September 15 at 9:30 am at the home Gina Kossick.  If you are not a regular hostess, please let me know if you wish to bring a breakfast item for that day. We are beginner friendly and can give you a touch up lesson or teach you how to play. Must let the hostess know if you need a lesson so you are not counted in the table count. Welcome back to another year of socializing, eating, coffee drinking and hopefully we can get some euchre playing time in!!!!!

Please email ladieseuchre@troynewcomers.com for further information or if you are interested in hosting this activity.

Ladies Game Night (Girls’ Night Out)

Game Night is a fun-filled night of beginner-friendly games. Each month we have a hostess choose a date and time that works for her. The hostess plans the games and serves some light refreshments. The games can be anything that she thinks would be fun with some light competition. We have done cards, board games, charades, activity games, dominoes or something new.  If you attend regularly but do not host, it is asked that you offer to bring something to help out the hostess.
We will start off this season on Wednesday. September 9 at 7:00.

If you would like more information about Game Night, please contact Jill M. or e-mail gamenight@troynewcomers.com.

Ladies Pickleball

Welcome Pickleballers to the 2026-27 Indoor Season! The first session runs from Oct 7 (we’ll skip the 14th as the church has their Rummage Sale) through Nov 18 and the next session will start Dec 2 – Jan 28. As in the past, we will play Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00 in the gym of Troy First United Methodist Church at 6363 Livernois.
All are welcome to play. There are 2 courts for our use. For beginners, we will teach you if you don’t know how to play. There are also balls and paddles available at the church for our use. (Beginners can use the church’s paddles until you fall in love with the game and buy your own.) The ladies are nice, we laugh a lot and everyone has a good time! Our #1 rule is NO Falling and #2 is to have FUN!
If you would like to play, please email your name, email and phone number by September 25. The cost to play is $60/week x 6 (the number of weeks) and is divided by the number of players. If it comes out to an odd number like $18.23, the fee is rounded up to the nearest $5 and the difference is allocated to an upcoming Newcomer charity project. The fee to play is due Oct 7 (the first week of play.)
If you can’t play the entire session, please consider being a sub. If you are a regular player and can’t make it, we do ask that you try to get a substitute. A sub list is provided.
Looking forward to a new, fun year of pickleball!

If you have any questions, please email pickleball@troynewcomers.com.

Mah Jongg

The Troy Newcomers Mahjongg group met 2 times in August and enjoyed friendships, great conversations, delightful refreshments and several Mahjongg games. We will be meeting again in September with locations to be announced prior to game days. The tentative dates of play will be Friday, September 11th at 9:30AM and September 25th at 1:00PM.
New Mahjongg players are encouraged to join and will be assisted by existing members in learning the game.

Please e-mail mahjongg@troynewcomers.com for more information about mah jongg.

Meadow Brook Ushering

If you are a play lover, then this activity is for you! The Meadow Brook season looks especially interesting with play topics from westerns (“The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”) to rock-and-roll (“Rolling Thunder – A Rock Journey”). We usher the third week of each play (fourth week for “A Christmas Carol”). Ushers are responsible for arriving 45 minutes prior to the play start, helping to seat patrons, then they can sit back and enjoy the play.

Our next performance is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Our dates to usher run from Wednesday, October 21 to Sunday, October 25, 2026.

To learn more about an individual play, check the Meadowbrook Theater website – https://www.mbtheatre.com/20252026-season

If you would like information regarding ushering at Meadow Brook or have questions, please email meadowbrook@troynewcomers.com.

Scrapbooking

We will not be having a scrapbooking activity in September.

If you are interested in participating or have questions, please email scrapbooking@troynewcomers.com

Widows Group

Our one-year anniversary for this group will be celebrated with a potluck at the home of Marie Hochstein on Tuesday, 9.22.26 starting at 6:30 pm. All those who have lost a partner are welcome.  All interested members will be added to our text string and sent additional information for our Tuesday, September 22nd gathering.

For additional information, please email widowsgroup@troynewcomers.com.

Wine Tasting

The September Wine Tasting will be held on Saturday, September 19, 6:30pm.
Each wine tasting evening is hosted by a Troy Newcomer member. The members attending may bring a spouse or friend along with an appetizer, their wine glasses and $10 per wine drinker which will contribute to the cost of the wine. Those who do not drink wine are welcome to attend. They will bring an appetizer but are not asked to pay the $10. When you RSVP, let the hostess know if you will not be drinking wine.
The hostess chooses the wines she would like to serve. The hostess supplies the coffee and desserts. This activity is held once a month on a Friday or Saturday evening of the hostess’s choice beginning at 6:30pm.

For additional information, please contact Ann B. or e-mail winetasting@troynewcomers.com.

If you would like more information or have ideas on additional activities for the Club, please send an email to clubactivities@troynewcomers.com.
